Stauber Announces Over $11 Million in Funding for the Aerial Lift Bridge
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) announced that the City of Duluth is set to receive $11,200,000 for the rehabilitation of the Aerial Lift Bridge.
Of this funding, Congressman Stauber stated, “The iconic Aerial Lift Bridge serves as a symbol of the great City of Duluth and is fundamental to the successful operation of our international port, which is why it is imperative that we maintain its upkeep for years to come. This funding will allow the city to make much needed improvements to ensure residents and visitors alike can continue to enjoy this historic bridge, and that the essential transport of cargo to and from our port remains uninterrupted.”
Duluth Mayor Reinert stated, “The City of Duluth is thrilled to receive this $11.2 million RAISE grant from the US Department of Transportation. The Aerial Lift Bridge isn’t just a bridge – it’s a cherished Minnesota icon, a significant entryway to the Port of Duluth-Superior, and a critical point of connection for residents and visitors alike. Along with funding from our State partners, this RAISE grant almost completes funding for this $20 million project. Thank you to our congressional delegation and the US Department of Transportation for recognizing how important this project is to our city and region.”
Director of Public Works and Utilities, Jim Benning, stated, "This RAISE grant is crucial to the completion of much needed and deferred improvements to the Aerial Lift Bridge--an historic landmark and gateway to the port. In one fell swoop, the City of Duluth will replace pedestrian walkways, replace the bridge deck, apply new protective paint to the bridge, and make other structural improvements. We are grateful to our federal partners for their support of this infrastructure, crucial to both vehicular and maritime traffic."
These funds were made available through the FY25 Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program.
