City of Biwabik to Receive $118,000 for Water Infrastructure Repair

May 21, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) announced the City of Biwabik will receive $118,000 in grant money from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development for the repair of water and wastewater infrastructure.

"The city of Biwabik was confronted with substantial repair costs for damaged water and wastewater infrastructure following a washout last year," said Congressman Stauber. "I am grateful to the USDA for securing this grant and helping to alleviate the burden that was placed on this important community in Minnesota's Eighth Congressional District."

"When the washout occurred in Spring 2018, the City of Biwabik knew that we would be faced with significant repair costs for the damaged infrastructure for our water and wastewater systems," said Mayor of Bawabik, Jim Weikum. "Agencies like the USDA and Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation stepped in and dramatically mitigated the financial impact of the damages. It has been gratifying to be able to partner with these agencies when faced with such challenges."

"We are very appreciative of all of the assistance that we have received from the USDA," said Bawabik City Administrator, Jeff Jacobson. "The Baxter, MN Rural Development office has been wonderful to work with in order to reconnect these vital services."
