One of the great privileges that I have as a Member of Congress is the opportunity to nominate outstanding students from the 8th Congressional District of Minnesota to the United States Service Academies. Earning acceptance into one of these academies provides the opportunity to serve our country while receiving a world-class education. The academy selection process is extremely competitive. Academies consider scholastic achievements, involvement in school and community activities, leadership potential, achievements and athletic accomplishments during in this process. I encourage you to contact my office if you are interested applying to a United States Service Academy and meet the criteria outlined below.

Students are encouraged to begin considering attendance at an academy as early as freshman or sophomore year in high school so that appropriate coursework and activities are undertaken. Minimum requirements for nomination: • Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 22 (or 17 and 24 for the Merchant Marine Academy) as of July 1 of the year the applicant would enter the academy. • Applicants must be unmarried. • Applicants must not be pregnant or have a legal obligation to support children or other dependents. • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

A complete application packet must include: • Application form • Three (3) letters of recommendation, signed and dated with address of individual • A high school transcript (mailed directly from your high school) or a college transcript if applicable. • SAT and/or ACT scores (photocopies are acceptable) • One page essay (typed) about why you would like to attend a U.S. service academy • Photo
