Congressman Pete Stauber Leads Letter Urging Air Force Secretary to Base F-35 Fleet at the 148th Fighter Wing

October 28, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08), joined by members of the Minnesota delegation, sent a letter to Air Force Secretary Troy Meink urging him to base a fleet of F-35 Fighter Jets at the 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth, Minnesota. This letter was sent as the Department of the Air Force reviews scoring criteria for the formal basing process that evaluates candidate sites for major weapons systems and personnel.

“As threats from dangerous adversaries continue to escalate, America must remain ready to respond,” said Congressman Pete Stauber. “The 148th Fighter Wing already plays a crucial role in defending the homeland, and equipping them with the most lethal, survivable, and connected fighter jet would further strengthen their mission. The brave men and women of the 148th who serve alongside our active-duty forces deserve the best equipment available so they can execute their duties and return home safely. As a strong supporter of the 148th Fighter Wing, I have long fought to base the F-35 here in the Northland, and I will continue my advocacy until the job is done.”

In the letter, Congressman Stauber emphasized the 148th’s stellar performance during recent operations in the Middle East, importance to homeland defense, strategic location, prime airspace, State Partnership Programs, and local support as reasons for the F-35 to be based there.
