ICYMI: Biden Vetoes Stauber-Backed Buy America Legislation
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) made the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s veto of Republican-led legislation that would have overturned his Administration’s rule to waive the “Buy America” requirements for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations purchased using American taxpayer dollars.
Of the President’s veto, Stauber said, “Once again, President Biden has chosen Communist China over America. This veto is a slap in the face to Minnesota’s miners who, for the past 150 years, have safely produced the iron ore to make the American steel that our nation was built upon. In fact, the taconite sourced on our legendary Iron Range accounts for 80% of America’s steel. If we are going to buy EV chargers using American taxpayer dollars to appease the President’s unrealistic EV mandates, they should be made in America with American-sourced minerals. Simple as that.”
President Biden set an extreme goal of installing 500,000 EV chargers by 2030, and to support his careless push for a massive transition to EVs, the Biden Administration instituted a rule to abandon Buy America requirements for EV chargers.
Congressman Stauber recently joined a bipartisan group of his colleagues in the House in voting to remove Biden’s waiver of Buy America requirements for iron and steel that gets incorporated into federally funded EV chargers. The Democrat-led Senate did the same.
