Stauber Calls to Replenish Funding for Paycheck Protection Program

April 16, 2020

HERMANTOWN, MN – Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) made the following statement after the $350 billion of funding for the Paycheck Protection Program has been depleted as more than 1.6 million small businesses have sought funds.

"As a proud Member of the House Small Business Committee, I know the Paycheck Protection Program has served as a critical lifeline for small businesses and employees across Minnesota, and the nation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This program has been so popular that, as of today, it is officially out of money.

"Once we knew that this program was on track to run out of funding, I joined many of my colleagues in calling for a clean bill to replenish these funds. We could have easily accomplished this a week ago when Senate Majority Leader McConnell put forward a resolution to bolster the Paycheck Protection Program with an additional $250 billion. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats and Speaker Pelosi once again decided hold critical funds hostage in an attempt to insert their wish list of provisions.

"A national crisis is not the time to restructure our nation through the vision of one political party, and I am certain the American people will not soon forget the Democrats' shameful actions. The cost of continued Democrat obstruction will be more lost jobs and shuttered businesses. It is high time Democrats abandon political games and join Republicans to deliver a clean, standalone funding bill for the Paycheck Protection Program. There are 22 million Americans currently out of work, and they need our help now."
