Stauber Fights for Mining in Minnesota
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) spoke on an Amendment he introduced blocking opponents of mining from needlessly adding an additional layer of bureaucratic red-tape to our nation’s already-stringent mining approval process. Stauber’s Amendment did not advance due to partisan opposition from the Majority.
Congressman Stauber said (in part): "In northern Minnesota, there are vast reserves of copper, nickel, and precious metals, offering the opportunity for northeastern Minnesota to power our economy while providing high-wage union jobs and diminishing our reliance on foreign sources.
"The proposed Twin Metals project has a long and arduous regulatory review ahead because our approval processes are the strongest in the world. Twin Metals is following the process; they will cross every “T” and dot every “I”; and they will eventually employ our friends and neighbors in good mining jobs of the future.
"Unfortunately, politicians in Washington, D.C. and the Twin Cities Metro area oppose the project. They know we have the strongest environmental reviews in the world and they know Twin Metals will meet or exceed every standard. So, they decided to change the rules."
