Stauber Leads Letter to Biden Administration Urging Withdrawal of Haaland Interior Nomination
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) sent a letter with other Congressional leaders to the Biden Administration, urging them to withdraw the nomination of Representative Deb Haaland (D-NM) as Secretary of the Interior. In the letter, Stauber and his colleagues cite Rep. Haaland's support of job-killing bills like the Green New Deal and her poor track record on issues like mining.
Of this letter, Congressman Stauber stated, "I am proud to lead this letter to the Biden Administration because the Interior Department with Representative Haaland at the helm would be disastrous for northern Minnesota's natural resources-based economy and working men and women across the nation. Not only has Representative Haaland championed expensive socialist policies like the Green New Deal, which seeks to force energy-sensitive mines, paper mills, and manufacturers in this country out of business, but she has also actively worked to end high-wage mining jobs here in the Northland.
"As a colleague of Representative Haaland's on the House Natural Resources Committee, I cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that she supported and voted for H.R. 5598, a dangerous piece of legislation that would eliminate quality jobs for many of my constituents on the Iron Range by placing a moratorium on mining before specific projects can go through a fair and science-based permitting process.
"In doing so, Representative Haaland has not only demonstrated her disregard for Minnesota's mining, timber, and manufacturing communities and union members, but also made it abundantly clear that she would prefer to rely on resources sourced from foreign countries with no environmental or labor standards like Communist China, Russia, and the Congo.
"Therefore, I urge the Biden Administration to do the right thing and withdraw this misguided nomination. They must quickly identify a nominee who understands that protecting our environment and responsibly sourcing the resources necessary for everyday life are not mutually exclusive. We can do both, and we need a nominee that prioritizes both goals."
