Stauber Reintroduces Aviation Safety Legislation to Improve the Notice to Air Missions System

January 12, 2023

Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) reintroduced the NOTAM Improvement Act, legislation that will enhance aviation safety by improving the safety notification system for pilots.

“Yesterday’s failures show the urgent need for updates and improvements to the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system to keep air traffic moving safely in our skies,” said Congressman Stauber. “In my time on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I have heard from many pilots who have expressed concerns over the NOTAM system which is why yesterday’s news came as no surprise. We must quickly pass my legislation to figure out how to make the NOTAM system work better for pilots and passengers alike, and ensure greater oversight of the Federal Aviation Administration going forward to avoid future problems.”

Specifically, Congressman Stauber’s legislation would establish a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) taskforce to determine what improvements should be made to the NOTAM system, which alerts pilots of potential hazards along a flight route or at a location that could affect the safety of the flight. This includes updates to ensure the stability, resiliency and cybersecurity of the NOTAM computer system.

Congressman Stauber’s legislation previously passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support in the 116th and 117th Congresses.
