March 27, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) made the following statement after attending the Medal of Honor ceremony for Army Staff Sergeant Travis Atkins of Bozeman, Montana.

"Staff Sergeant Travis Atkins was a hero who went beyond the call of duty and gave his life to save his brothers in arms, earning him our nation's highest military honor. His selfless act of courage is why he will always be remembered as one of our nation's bravest warriors. While we will never be able to repay Travis Atkins for his sacrifice, we can and must ensure his legacy of service, valor, and patriotism lives on."

Staff Sergeant Travis Atkins was killed saving three of his fellow soldiers from an explosion from an Iraqi suicide bomber by turning himself into a human shield.

Stauber was invited to the ceremony by Travis Atkins' family, some of whom live in Minnesota's Eighth Congressional District.
