Stauber Statement on State of the Union

February 5, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) tonight released the following statement in response to President Trump's State of the Union Address:

"Tonight, we heard an energetic and positive speech from President Trump. I am grateful for his calls for unity and bipartisanship as Americans are tired of divisive politics; they want us to work together, solve problems, and protect the future of this great nation.

"As we reflect on the State of the Union tonight, I believe that we have much to be proud of, but even more to accomplish. I appreciate and agree with much of President Trump's vision, including the need to protect American workers from unfair trade deals, address our nation's crumbling infrastructure, lower healthcare costs, and create a safe and legal immigration system.

"Our national security continues to be of paramount concern as we have yet to come to an agreement on the crisis at the border. I firmly support President Trump's resolve to secure our border and prevent illicit drugs, human trafficking and illegal immigrants from entering our nation. As a law enforcement officer of 23 years, I know that Americans want a nation of law and order. I urge Democratic Leadership to meet the President halfway, so we can finally begin to work on an agreement that strengthens border security, supports our law enforcement, and protects our citizens.

"Bipartisanship is essential going forward, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the 116th Congress on both sides of the aisle and producing real reforms that benefit the American people."
