HERMANTOWN, MN – Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) released the below statement following the news that Cleveland-Cliffs has temporarily halted operations at Northshore Mining.

“Northern Minnesota is largely defined by its iron mining, which is why I was saddened to hear operations at Northshore Mining have been temporary halted as a result of COVID-19. While this news is certainly disappointing, it is important to remember that this closure is temporary. We will overcome this crisis, and when we do, we will need Minnesota’s miners more than ever as we collectively work to become a more self-reliant nation.

“The COVID-19 pandemic only further highlights the urgency in which we must support and expand domestic mining. Minnesota’s miners are ready to produce the resources to meet all our security, infrastructure, and manufacturing needs. We cannot afford to outsource these resources any longer.

“To every Minnesotan who is now out of work because of this closure, I want you to know that you are essential to the success of this nation. I am thinking of you, and I will never stop fighting for you.”
