Stauber Votes No on Pelosi’s Payoff to the Progressives

March 10, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) released the following statement after voting against the $1.9 trillion stimulus package. Of this legislation, Congressman Stauber stated:

"Pelosi's stimulus package is back in the House for consideration, but unfortunately, not much has changed since we last voted on this disastrous legislation as it is still primarily comprised of wasteful provisions and far-left giveaways that Pelosi and her allies in Congress are trying to pass under the guise of COVID relief. In fact, less than ten percent of the funds in this package would actually go towards defeating the virus.

"Any relief that is passed by Congress must be targeted, temporary, and tied to COVID. Unfortunately, this package happens to be the most expensive single bill in American history, and its passage will undoubtedly result in tax increases to be shouldered by hardworking middle-class Americans for years to come. Quite frankly, this is the last thing that we should be passing at a time when so many Americans are struggling to get back on their feet.

"Congress has delivered bipartisan COVID relief as recently as this past December, and $1 trillion of those funds remain unspent. We should ensure that those recently approved funds get into the hands of its intended recipients and have the envisioned effect, before plunging ahead with even more spending. Instead, the Democrats chose to exploit this crisis to advance their own partisan agenda. I share my constituents' disappointment over this partisan process and believe that the American people deserve better."

Among the partisan pork included in this $1.9 trillion package:

  • Stimulus checks for illegal immigrants
  • $50 million for Planned Parenthood
  • $200 million for Museum and Library Services
  • $270 million for the Endowment for Arts/Humanities
  • $600 million for Pelosi's hometown of San Francisco
  • $12 billion for foreign aid
  • $111 billion for welfare without work requirements
