Stauber Votes to Secure American Elections

July 10, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) voted for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act to strengthen the current law that permits only U.S. citizens to vote in federal elections.

"President Biden's open border policies have allowed over 12 million illegal immigrants into this country, dramatically increasing the threat of fraud in this upcoming election. As this administration continues to bus and fly in illegal immigrants across this country on the taxpayers' dime, coupled with states allowing illegal immigrants to receive drivers licenses and other state and federal benefits, we have the very real and serious concern that non-citizens will have ample opportunity to illegally register to vote in federal elections. This is fundamentally un-American and undemocratic. Only Americans should decide the outcome of U.S. elections.

"This border crisis has made it all the more important to secure the voter registration process, which is why I was proud to support the SAVE Act. Commonsense legislation like the SAVE Act will preserve the right to vote for American citizens, safeguarding our democracy."

The SAVE Act will do the following:

  • Require an individual to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.
  • Provide states with access to existing federal databases so they can clean up their voter registration rolls and remove noncitizens from the rolls.
