Stauber Votes YES on Israel and Taiwan Security Supplementals, Votes NO on Ukraine Security Supplemental
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) voted to supporttwo separate security supplemental packages for Israel and Taiwan, while voting against the security supplemental package for Ukraine. After voting concluded, Stauber issued the following statement.
“Thanks to President Biden’s weakness and appeasement on the global stage, our adversaries have become emboldened, and we are seeing an increase in violent conflict around the globe. Under Biden’s watch, Russia has invaded Ukraine, China is preparing to occupy Taiwan, and last weekend, Iran directly attacked Israel for the first time in history. The threats facing Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine are their own unique and separate issues, which is why I was glad for the ability to address them individually today.
“Israel is our top ally in the Middle East, and they are engaged in conflicts on four separate fronts. They are fighting the Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi terror groups, as well as Iran, the largest state sponsor of terrorism. I voted to provide aid to Israel to help them stop the spread of terrorism and defeat enemies who seek to wipe them off the face of the Earth. Israel is fighting for its very existence, and we cannot abandon them.
“In an ominous New Years address, Chinese President Xi Jinping asserted that 2024 was the year that he intends to invade Taiwan. I voted to provide aid to Taiwan to deter China from starting this fight, in the hopes that this will spare human lives and prevent further aggression down the line.
“While I wholeheartedly support Ukraine in their fight against Russia, I voted against providing another round of funding for Ukraine. The United States has already provided over $100 billion in funding for this war, and we should not continue to assume the primary fiscal responsibility. Unfortunately, there has been insufficient transparency surrounding the funding and equipment the American taxpayers have sent so far, and European countries have failed to take on their fair share of the funding for this war.
“I do not make this decision on Ukraine lightly. An America First agenda can coexist with financial support for our allies, but fiscal prudence must be considered, especially when over $100 billion has already been given. The overwhelming majority of my constituents have expressed opposition to additional funding for Ukraine as they continue to struggle under the weight of Biden’s disastrous economic, energy, and open border policies.”
