Stauber Votes Yes on Israel Emergency Supplemental Package
The package would be offset by defunding President Biden’s 87,000 new IRS agents
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08)made the following statement after voting for the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, a $14.3 billion emergency supplemental package to ensure Israel has the resources necessary to defend itself against terrorism.
“Israel is our greatest ally and the only democracy in the Middle East, so the United States must stand with them as they defend themselves from the barbaric war launched by Hamas. This means providing them with the resources necessary to completely eradicate these terrorists. I know some Americans are worried about the costs associated with supporting Israel, which is why I applaud Speaker Johnson’s plan to pay for this package by taking funds away from Biden's army of IRS agents. Our new Speaker is off to a great start.”
The Israel Supplemental Appropriations Act would be paid for by making cuts to President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, specifically Section 10301, which appropriated billions in funding to hire 87,000 new IRS agents.
This legislation would specifically do the following:
- Ensures American military readiness by providing $4.4 billion to replenish domestic defense stockpiles.
- Bolsters Israel’s defensive capabilities and stockpiles of munitions, specifically by providing:
1. $4 billion to replenish Iron Dome and David’s Sling missile defense systems.
2. $3.5 billion in Foreign Military Financing for the procurement of advanced weapons systems and defense articles and services.
3. $1.2 billion for the continued development of the Iron Beam system to counter short-range threats.
4. $1 billion to support artillery and munitions production. - Supports US personnel and citizens by providing:
1. $150 million for an enhanced security presence at the U.S. Embassy.
2. $50 million for the evacuation of U.S. citizens. - Ensures accountability by requiring the Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State to provide written reports to Congress detailing U.S. security assistance provided to Israel.
