HERMANTOWN, MN – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber issued an invitation to high school students who reside in Minnesota's Eighth District to enter the 2020 Congressional Art Competition. Every year, Congress holds an art competition to highlight talented young artists throughout the nation. The winner from each Congressional district will have their artwork displayed in the United States Capitol for the following year.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) participated in a House Natural Resources Committee hearing to voice his strong opposition to H.R. 5598, a bill authored by Congresswoman Betty McCollum, that would kill high-wage mining jobs in northern Minnesota. As a guest of the Committee, Congressman Stauber had the chance to personally question witnesses on the impact that this bill would have on his district.

WASHINGTON – Minnesota's congressional delegation, as well as its tourism and mining communities, split sharply Wednesday over Rep. Betty McCollum's bill to ban mining on more than 234,000 acres of federally owned wilderness near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness along the state's northeastern edge.

At a hearing before a subcommittee of the House Natural Resources Committee, McCollum, a Democrat from St. Paul, argued that the potential threat of water pollution from sulfide-ore copper mining was not worth the risk to one of the country's natural wonders.

Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) and Rep. Pete Stauber (R-Minn.) were both hoping to hear President Trump outline a plan for rising healthcare costs in Tuesday's State of the Union address.

Duluth Mayor Emily Larson was Smith's guest for the speech.

"I wanted to invite Mayor Larson to come with me because I so admire her leadership on healthcare issues and housing issues," Sen. Smith said.

According to Smith, the cost of healthcare is the No. 1 issue she hears from Minnesota voters.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Pete Stauber (MN-08) announced that he has invited his constituent and member of a local trade union, Mahaila Houle, to attend the 2020 State of the Union as his guest. Mahaila is currently employed helping to expand a local hospital, but the job is temporary, and she is eager to begin construction on the Line 3 replacement project.

CLOQUET, MN -- Mahaila Houle will be in the U.S. House of Representatives chambers Tuesday attending President Trump's third State of the Union Address as a guest of Rep. Pete Stauber (R - MN 8th).

Houle, a member of the Fond du Lac Band, is an apprentice of Operating Engineers Local 49 and has worked on notable projects including Superior Street and the Essentia expansion project.

Stauber said Houle's position is temporary and she's eager to begin construction on the Line 3 replacement project.
